Obituary for Vera Maria Troester

Vera Maria Troester, of Sandy Hook, beloved wife of William Troester, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 3, 2016 at the age of 87. She was surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home. Vera is survived by her devoted husband William, her sons Bill Troester of Oxford and Michael Troester and his wife Sheryl of New Milford. She is also survived by her siblings Ingrid Tesch and her husband Guenther of St. Petersburg, FL and Herman Rutner of Cambridge, MA. She was predeceased by her sister Christine Cardillo of Ellicot City, MD. Vera was a proud grandmother of Michael Troester Jr., his wife Shannon and their son Gavin of Newtown, Kristen Troester of Brookfield, Christopher Troester of New Britain, Nicholas Troester and Alyssa Troester of New Milford. Vera was born and raised in East Prussia, Germany. In March of 1945, she and her family were able to flee on the last plane out before the Russian invasion. They settled in a small town in southern Germany, where Vera worked for the U.S. Army Air Force Exchange Service as an accountant. In 1953, the family immigrated to the United States and Vera was able to continue her work for the Army Air Force in New York City. She married her husband Bill on May 14, 1955 and moved to Sandy Hook in 1962 where she resided for the duration of her life. She worked as a secretary and accountant for the Children's Adventure Center in Sandy Hook and retired in 1993. Vera remained actively involved there by serving as a board member for many years. She enjoyed traveling, planting flowers in her beautiful gardens and spending time with her grandchildren. Vera will be sadly missed by all. The family will receive friends at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown between the hours of 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 9th at 10 a.m. in Three Saints Orthodox Church, 26 Howard Avenue, Ansonia. Burial will follow in Three Saints Orthodox Catholic Cemetery in Seymour.
