Obituary for James William "Jim" Murphy

James “Jim” Murphy age 93 of Newtown passed away peacefully at Bethel Health Care Center on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Rosemary “Barbara” Karukas Murphy. Jim was born on January 24, 1924 in Stamford, CT. He was the son of the late John and Katherine (Dunn) Murphy. Jim was the 5th of six children and is survived by his sister, Shirley Cipot of Long Island, NY.
Jim is also survived by two children, James R. and wife Mary Lou, of Loveland, OH and Catherine and husband Daniel Murphy of Southbury. He is also survived by five grandson’s, Michael, Justin, Matthew, Christopher, and Mark Murphy, and eight great-grandchildren.
Jim was a graduate of the Stamford schools and served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for over twenty years and retired as a builder in the Western Connecticut area.
Known lovingly as “Dee” to his family, he enjoyed gardening, spending time with his beloved great-grandchildren and all the activities, and would often be found on the sidelines or in the stands of any of their games cheering them on.
Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Rose of Lima Church.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents at Bethel Cascades and Bethel Health Care for their care and compassion. The family also would like to thank Dr. Sean McGrade for his dedication and guidance with Jim’s care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00pm on Monday March 13 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Church Hill Road, Newtown. Interment will take place at the Newtown Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim and Barbara can be made to St. Rose Church, Church Hill Road, Newtown, CT.
