Obituary for Virginia K. Schultz (Syron)

Virginia K. Schultz
Jan. 17, 1917 - July 12, 2017

Virginia K. Schultz (nee Syron), 100, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2017 at her residence with family at her side. The daughter of James Syron and Almeida Thompson, she was a longtime resident of the Bronx, where she was born, a longtime resident of Yorktown Heights, and more recently a resident of the Maplewood community at Newtown, Connecticut. She retired as an office manager from Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1985, and then took adult-ed classes at Fordham University while also volunteering with Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights.

In her retirement Virginia enjoyed travel and many social and recreational activities with dear friends and fellow residents of Jefferson Village in Westchester County. Her 100th birthday celebration earlier this year was attended by fifty friends and family members. She always had a good sense of humor, and said at that celebration that she didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

Virginia was a voracious book reader and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. She loved card games and played regularly with her circle of friends until recently. She attributed her excellent health and longevity to good genes as well as to a lifetime habit of walking and stair climbing.

Virginia was a devout Catholic and attended Sunday mass every week until a month ago. She was a parishioner of St. Anselms in the Bronx during her youth, and later St. Philip Neri in the Bronx, where she was married on June 4, 1949. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Brendan’s in the Bronx, and also of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Shrub Oak. Since 2015 she was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima in Newtown.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward V. Schultz, son Edward J. Schultz, and brothers William Syron and James Syron. She is survived by son Kenneth Schultz and wife Sandra of Accomac, VA; daughter Virginia Benoit and husband Tim of Newtown, CT; granddaughters Kristen Schultz Oliver, Alyson Schultz Johnson, Megan Schultz Ochotorena, and Erica Benoit; grandson Ted Benoit; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and their families; and a host of friends and admirers.

Visitation will be at Honan Funeral Home in Newtown, CT, on Monday July 17, from 3 to 7 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, Tuesday, July 18, at 10 AM. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local hospice, or to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Rd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 (guidingeyes.org).
