Obituary for Hazel Agnes Meyers

Hazel Agnes Meyers, age 79 passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Bethel Heath Care surrounded by family members. She was born February 6, 1932, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England a daughter of the late William Edward Armstrong and Emma Louise Swinhoe. Hazel actively served 8 years in the British Army as a Driving Instructor for 12-ton trucks. In 1961 Hazel moved to The United States. She initially settled in New York City working for Harcourt Brace and Javonovich as an Editor. After relocating to Bridgeport she was married and worked as a Medical Assistant for St. Vincent’s Hospital. She later moved to Newtown where she worked for The Gordon Frazier Gallery for 13 years. She was a devoted mother and “Nana”.
Hazel was a devout Catholic and member of St Rose of Lima Church parish in Newtown where she resided for more than 43 years. In the mid-1970’s Hazel was a founding member of the Adult Dance Program at The Lathrop School of Dance. Those who knew Hazel admired her for her graciousness and humility. She found peace in studying Scripture. She will be greatly missed by many.
She was previously married to the late George W. Meyers Jr. She is survived by a brother, Joe Armstrong of Scotland, UK . She is also survived by her 3 children; daughter Michelle L. Meyers of Naugatuck , son George W. Meyers, III of Waterbury and daughter Heather A. Yarberry and her husband Scott of Guyton, GA. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren; Justin Engstrand of Naugatuck , and Morgan, Remick and Bronwyn Yarberry of Guyton, GA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church Thursday February 17th, 2011 at 11:00am. Interment will be in St. Rose Cemetery in the Spring. Friends may call in the Honan Funeral Home 58 Main St. Newtown Wednesday February 16th, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
