Obituary for James R. "Jim" Alvord

Print
James (Jim) Robertson Alvord, 84 years old, loving husband, proud father and lifelong Red Sox fan, died peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2018.

Born and raised in Newton Centre, MA, Jim, son of Carl and Carmen (Buckley) Alvord, graduated from Sacred Heart High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Boston College. He completed Officers Candidate School and served in the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant JG for four years. His career that followed was based largely in sales for corporations based in Manhattan and Connecticut. Until a recent move to New Milford, he lived in Norwalk, CT for 53 years.

Jim was distinguished by his tireless commitment to service, a characteristic he ascribed to his Jesuit education. The organizations that support young people, civic engagement and education in which he became involved, grew and flourished. Among the diverse programs to which he gave the most time were youth ministries at St. Philip and St. Jerome parishes, Norwalk Church League Youth Basketball, Boy Scouts of America, the Norwalk Public Library, the Boston College Alumni Association, and Voice of the Faithful. Jim's commitment to his Boston sports teams - particularly the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins -- was legendary, and he was happiest when he could get a copy of the Boston Globe sports section in a community dominated by New York fans. Jim was rarely seen not sporting a Red Sox cap.

Devoted and proud of his large family, he leaves his wife of almost 57 years, Barbara Driscoll Alvord; his children Mary Alvord MacDonald (Michael) of Williamstown, MA, John J. Alvord (Sandra Proksa) of Bethel, CT, James R. Alvord II (Elizabeth) of Scituate, MA, Paul P. Alvord (Laurie Cheung) of Tomales, CA and Elizabeth Alvord Bonis (Patrick) of South Kent, CT. Jim is also survived by six grandchildren, William, Oliver, Patrick, Odin, Alexander and Cullen, and two step-grandchildren, Colin and Marichal. He leaves his brother John C. Alvord, sisters Lucille A. Swan and Mary A. Biette and a dozen nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by granddaughter Isabel.

A Mass and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, Norwalk. To honor Mr. Alvord's extensive and generous community service, in lieu of flowers, please consider doing an act of kindness for someone else.
