Obituary

Obituary for Joseph Edward "Joe" Borst Sr.

Joseph “Joe” Edward Borst, Sr., 92, of Sandy Hook, CT, passed away at Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton, CT, on March 31, 2020.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Ann (Caron), and their five children, Joseph Borst, Jr. and wife Kristi of Wells, ME, Elizabeth Haugaard and husband Peer (deceased) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Michael Borst and wife Susan of Ansonia, CT, James Borst and wife Laurie of Elizabethtown NC, and Mary Marks and husband Fred of Morristown, NJ. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren (plus one on the way) who he loved very much.
Joe was born to Francis and Kathryn (Kelly) Borst, Sr. on July 17, 1927, in Jackson Heights, NY., the second of five children. Joe enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in September 1944 and was stationed in Germany as part of the post-WWII occupation. He also served as an Air Cadet in US Air Force from 1952 to 1954. Joe graduated from Middlebury College in 1951 with a BA in Psychology and later in life earned his Master of Education degree at Western Connecticut State College.
A resident of Newtown from 1955 until 2018, Joe worked for Sikorsky Aircraft (twice) and Perkin Elmer on various government-contracted projects, including the Hubbell Telescope.
Very civic-minded, Joe served Newtown in many capacities for more than five decades. He was a member of the Legislative Council; president and treasurer of Newtown Housing for the Elderly; chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission; a Selectman and First Selectman. Most recently, he was on the Sustainable Energy Commission, and was very proud to serve on the Public Building and Site Commission’s project to rebuild Sandy Hook Elementary School. In October 2016, Joe received an official citation from the State of Connecticut recognizing his 50+ years of service to the town of Newtown, and to the State of Connecticut. In November 2019, Joe was awarded the Community Americanism Award by the Newtown American Legion Post 202.
Joe was also an active member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, and a long-time supporter of the Newtown High School Band Parents Association, and the Newtown Scholarship Association.
Calling hours and a funeral mass will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Newtown Scholarship Association P.O. Box 302, Newtown, CT 06470 or online at http://www.newtownscholarship.org

Barbara and family, I am a former neighbor, Jack McAvoy. I grew up on Beechwood Dr. just up the hill from your happy house. I think my parents, Jack and Louise, along with you and Joe, were among the earliest "pioneers" to that part of "Beechbrook." I believe we moved there in 1956. Both of you were wonderful neighbors. I respected Joe in every way. He was such a great guy to me and I know to Joanne and Patricia as well. And though I was a few years older than your kids, I remember my sisters were closer in age and really played well together. As you can imagine, my feelings about my family's history in Sandy Hook are mixed. But there were only positive vibes connected with the Borst family. I can still picture you both, in your 30s, young parents building your house and building your lives and making the lives of everybody who came to know you better. I am glad I was one of them. My condolences to all. But how fortunate you all were to have had such a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather -- and any other relationship! He was one for the ages!

Nancy and I are saddened by the passing of Joseph, a very special person. He always put others before himself. He was a dedicated Newtown resident, committed to serving us all. Although his physical being is gone, his memory will remain in our hearts and minds forever. Now, he will be contributing and serving us from heaven. God bless you Joe.

With Love & Appreciation,
Nancy & Al Roznicki

I served on a political town committee with Joe, and as a member of the P&Z Commission. Joe Borst was as decent a human being as you can find. Society is diminished by his death. Thanks, Joe, for the examples you set for everyone you encountered.

It is with great sadness that I learn of Joe's passing. I served with him on the Board of Selectmen and know that he was a very gentle person with a very kind heart.
May he RIP.
