Frederick J. TerHaar, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Masonicare in Wallingford. Fred, 85, was a resident of Boynton Beach Florida and also resided with his long-term partner Carol Berube in Wallingford. He was born in Worcester, MA on May 6, 1928 the son of the late Frederick Sr., and Ethel (Monigle) TerHaar. Upon graduation from North High School in Worcester in 1946, Fred joined the U.S. Army and served in the occupation of Japan. After the army, he graduated from Worcester Junior College. During his college years he learned to fly and soon thereafter became a commercial pilot with United Airlines. He participated in the golden years of aviation, flying DC-3s to DC-10s, and retired from United Airlines in 1988. Fred enjoyed water and snow skiing while his children were growing up, and captaining his sailboat for many years in retirement. In addition to Carol, his companion of 28 years, he is survived by his son Larry and wife Beth of Danbury, his son John and wife Lori of Bradenton, FL and his daughter Lori Cavallero of Newtown. He is also survived by his former spouse Delores TerHaar, his grandchildren, Matthew and James TerHaar, Olivia Cavallero, Dana and Eric TerHaar, and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Chase TerHaar. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street Newtown on Monday, March 31 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a service at 7:00 pm. A graveside service will take place for family and close friends on Tuesday, April 1 at 11:00 am at Resurrection Cemetery in Newtown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s association.
