Angeline Rodia Zakhar, age 96, of Newtown, the beloved wife of the late Joseph Zakhar, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 6, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Aniello and Ermelinda (Calogero) Rodia
Throughout her life Angie was an active servant of her community. As a high school student, she volunteered at the Red Cross in Bridgeport, and graduated Harding High with honors. She was an active member of the World War II generation and heeded her call to wartime service. Angie did her part for the war effort working at Remington Rand and volunteering in the Civilian Air Patrol in Bridgeport while her late husband Joseph fought in World War II. While raising her family Angie volunteered in her children’s schools and worked full time at Harris and Gans. After retirement, she volunteered as an ESL tutor in Stratford at the Unitarian Church. In 1997, Angie moved to Newtown, and began to volunteer at the Faith Food Pantry for many years. Her commitment to helping others was extraordinary.
Angie loved to read, garden, and cook, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her loving family. She enjoyed attending the sporting events, dance recitals, and music concerts for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Angie is survived by her children: daughters JoAnn Whiting and Janet Bell, sons-in-law Steve Whiting and Doug Bell all of Newtown and son John Zakhar and daughter-in-law Alice Zakhar of New Milford. Also survived by six grandchildren: Jacquelyn Whiting, Cristin Whiting, Janna Sirowich, Jonathan Zakhar, Krista DeCrescenzo, and Laura Zakhar, and nine great-grandchildren: Zachary, Emma, Julia, Colin, Tommy, Joey, Kyla, Alex and Charlie.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday May 11th at 11:30am in St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St. Newtown Wednesday morning from 10:00am to 11:15am. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Faith Food Pantry, P. O. Box 53, Newtown, CT, 06470.
