Edite "Edie"  Mei (Salnitas)
Edite "Edie" Mei, 82 of Newtown and formerly of Bethel passed away
peacefully on March 22 after a courageous battle with melanoma at the Lutheran Home
in Southbury, CT. Edie was born in Riga, Latvia on March 17, 1936 a daughter of the late Vilmars and Ella Salnitis. She escaped Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1944 and came to the United States in 1949. Edie attended Danbury schools and was a 1955 graduate of Danbury High School. She later began a long and productive career with Perkin Elmer Corporation with duties in their accounting and travel divisions. Edie was predeceased by the love of her life, her late husband Robert F. Mei Sr. Her survivors include her brother Andris and his wife Jalna of Roswell,Georgia, her nieces Christine Salnitis and Dana Tully of Roswell, Georgia as well as her nephew Sven Salnitis and his wife Daina of Chatham , New York. Edie is also survived by her stepsons Robert F. Mei and his wife Barbara of Brookfield, and Donald Mei of Ridgefield, CT as well as her step grandsons, Robert F. Mei lll of New Milford and Tyler J. Mei of Brookfield, CT.
A quiet lady with a huge heart is described when she walked into a room.
The Salnitis and Mei families would like to express their appreciation to the Yale Smilow
Cancer Center who took the challenge in helping Edie fight her illness.
Last but not least many thanks go out to her support system of friends and neighbors who
supported her throughout the years. Services are private. There will be no calling hours upon her wishes.
