Obituary for Bertram Medve

Bertram “Bert” Medve, 96, of Newtown passed away Saturday October 24, 2009 in Masonicare at Newtown. He was the husband for 64 years of Rita (Hannowell) Medve who predeceased him in 2001.
Bert was born in Bridgeport on June 29, 1913 a son of Kalman and Elizabeth (Kovacs) Medve. He was educated in Fairfield Schools and attended the Bridgeport Engineering Institute. For the next 25 years, he was employed at the now extinct Underwood Elliot Fisher Corporation of Bridgeport where he was the Manufacturing Superintendent. Prior to his retirement in 1978, Bert was Engineering Supervisor at Remington Arms co. in Arkansas.
Bert was active in sports during his high school years. He particularly loved track (he held records for the “Broad Jump” for over 25 years after graduation) and baseball. He was inducted into the Brotherhood of Masons in 1951. When Bert retired he took up golf and was an active member of the Newtown Country Club. He also was a self taught artist and woodworker. Bert’s love for the outdoors resulted in his building many natural stone retaining walls on his property on Brushy Hill Road. He was very proud of them and enjoyed showing them to many a passing mason or neighbor stopping by his house to admire his work.
Bert is survived by a son, Richard Medve of West Ossippee, N. H. and a daughter, Patricia Bailey of Newtown; a brother, Kalman J. Medve of East Falmouth, Mass.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made, in his memory to the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 344, Newtown, CT 06470. The Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown is assisting the family.
