Obituary for Cheryl Lee Moulthrop (Tilson)

Cheryl Tilson Moulthrop, lifetime resident of Sandy Hook and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, passed away on the evening of September 29 due to complications from cancer. She was 68 years old.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bruce, married for 37 years. She was the proud mother of daughter Erin Karsif and husband, Benjamin, of Stratford; and son Stephen Moulthrop and wife, Isabel, of Cumming, Ga. Cheryl was the devoted grandmother to her granddaughters, Paisley and Avery Moulthrop, and her grandsons, Owen and Logan Karsif. She is also survived by her sister, Janet Knapp, and husband, Kenneth, of Sandy Hook; nieces Elyse, Erica, and Kristina Knapp of Sandy Hook; brother Charles Tilson of Sandy Hook; sister-in-law Lynn Moulthrop of North Falmouth, Mass.; and brother-in-law Seth Moulthrop and his wife, Arlene, of Coraopolis, Penn.
She is predeceased by her brother Gary Tilson; mother, Doris Tilson; and father, Charles S. Tilson, of Sandy Hook.
Cheryl was a strong-willed, caring, and talkative woman who opened her home to anyone needing a warm meal or an attentive ear. She was dedicated and hardworking. After graduating from Western Connecticut State University with a degree in education, she began working at Allied Container Company in Newtown in 1973. She worked at the same manufacturing facility for 42 years, even as the company changed ownership, ultimately retiring as a Customer Service Manager with Rand-Whitney packaging company in 2015.
Her biggest joy in life was being devoted to her family and friends, always putting others’ needs before her own. In her spare time, Cheryl loved to read books, easily finishing one in a single sitting. She shared a passion of cooking and baking, expanding upon the lessons from her mother and grandmothers, and then continuing the tradition with her husband Bruce. She spread love through her amazing dishes and phenomenal baked goods. A lifetime member of St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook, she supported her community by organizing their annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Suppers and Donut Drive-Thru events with her husband and dedicated many years as a vestry member and treasurer. In recent years, Cheryl would stay connected with her family and friends via social media, taking every opportunity to share pictures and videos of her grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, October 3, at Evergreen Cemetery in Watertown. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects, however, social distancing and masks are required.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the FAITH Food Pantry, St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown CT 06470; or to Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue at
