Donald L. Ferris, age 83 of Newtown died peacefully Tuesday January 26, 2010 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Craig Avery of Sturbridge, Massachusetts.
He was born in Rye, NY on March 28, 1926 a son of the late Henry and Catherine (Bartehan) Ferris. Don served in the US Army during World War II with the 554th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion. Mr. Ferris retired from Sikorsky Aircraft after 33 years of service. During his distinguished career as a design engineer, Don was the holder of 41 patents and was awarded with a lifetime achievement award in engineering named in his honor. A fifty year resident of Newtown, he was a member of the Newtown Lions Club and active in local politics.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, Donald is survived by his grandchildren, Alaina, Heather and Bryan Avery; a sister, Doris Delfosse and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Loretta and son Chet and by two sisters, Joanne Finley and Betty Jane Ruffner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown on Monday February 1, 2010 at 10:30am. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Rose Cemetery.
