Obituary for Helen Hoffmann (Hanlon)

HOFFMANN, Helen (Hanlon), of Newtown, passed January 13, 2010, at age 92. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Helen relocated to the US, upon her marriage in 1947 to the late Francis Hoffmann, and was a long time resident of Newtown. Loving mother of Michael Hoffmann of Madison, WI; Catherine Hoffmann of Hudson, MA; Christopher Hoffmann of Granby, CT; Elyse Hoffmann of Newtown and mother-in-law to Lynn (wife of Michael) and Jeanne (wife of Chris); proud nana of grandchildren Kristin, Claire, Natalie, Meagan, Steven, Kevin, Alex and Cristina. Also survived by her nieces Kathleen and Lorraine and dear friend Joyce McLean, all of Australia. She was a loyal employee of Newtown Real Estate and Insurance Service for many years.
For a school project for her niece Cristina in 2002, Helen recalled herself at the age of 29 as she embarked from her home in Australia to join her husband Francis in the United States: “I am a nature type of girl. I am also a tomboy. I play golf and I love to swim”. While raising four children in Newtown, Helen was a superb cook and greatly enjoyed annual family vacations to a cottage on the beach in Misquamicut, Rhode Island. She and Francis enjoyed traveling after his retirement. After Francis passed away, she enjoyed several trips with her children: with Catherine to Australia, with Elyse to Italy and with Michael to Heidelberg, Germany and Lake Louise in Canada.
In her later years, Helen was an avid reader, a fan of the New York Yankees and a critic of the political pundits. Helen will be missed by her family and friends for her ever genuine interest in others and ability to support and celebrate their accomplishments. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Churchill Road, Newtown, on Monday January 18, 2010 at 10:30am. Calling hours will be held in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Sunday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the Spring. The family kindly requests any donations in Helen's memory be to FISH (Friends in Service Here), 22 Bridge End Farm Lane, Sandy Hook, CT 06482 or to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps., P.O. Box 344, Newtown, CT 06470. To leave an online condolence go to http://www.honanfh.com
