Obituary for John Ronald "Ron" Smith

John R. “Ron” Smith, 79, of Newtown died in his home of 44 years on February 4th. Ron was the husband of Carol Smith. He was born in Norwalk October 26, 1933, son of the late Jack and Muriel Smith.

Before becoming a teacher for 30+ years in Stratford, Ron served 3 years in the United States Army. Ron received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in New York. He then earned two master's degrees, one from Bridgeport University and one from Western Connecticut State University. He received his 6 year degree in education from Fairfield University.

Ron was an active member of the community. He volunteered at the F.A.I.T H. Food Pantry, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Newtown Historical Society. Ron loved working outside building stone walls, good food and laughter, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and relaxing by the ocean.

In addition to Carol, his wife of 48 years, Ron is survived by his children, Janet McKeown and her husband Cole, of Newtown; Steven Smith and his wife Karen, of West Friendship, MD; and grandchildren Jonah, Heather, Annie and Kalie. He was survived by a sister, Sue and her husband Bob, of Lake Wales, FL.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church on Tuesday February 12th at 11:00am. Interment in Newtown Village Cemetery will be private.
Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown Monday Feb. 11th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm
