Josephine Elizabeth  Braun (Mescal)
Josephine Mescal Braun, 87, passed away Sunday January 30, 2011 at home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Braun was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Theodore A. Braun. She was born November 6, 1923 in New York City a daughter of Irish immigrant parents, James and Hannah (Gallagher) Mescal. She grew up in Ozone Park, Queens with 6 siblings.
Mrs. Braun graduated from Business College in New York City and worked for the American Red Cross and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She met her husband while at the Navy Yard and was married at St. Clements Church in Queens, then moving to Newtown in August, 1946. They owned and operated a Radio store in Sandy Hook. She was a devoted wife and homemaker raising and directing 6 children.
Josephine leaves her 6 children and 12 grandchildren. Her children are John Braun and his wife Patricia of Glen Mills, Pa, Dr. Kevin Braun and his wife Phyllis of Newtown, Claire Hughes and her husband Michael of Sandy Hook, Thomas Braun and his wife Deirdre of Woodbury, James Braun and his wife Maria of Southbury and Timothy Braun his wife Jessica of Sandy Hook. Her beloved grandchildren are; Teresa, Zachary, Ryan, Jessica, Sean & his wife Melissa, Erin & her husband Rocco, Melissa, Eric, Steven, Gary, Andrew & David. She devoted much of her retirement years to their well being. She always brightened when in their company. They were enriched by the time spent with her. She will be greatly missed by her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church Newtown on Saturday February 5, 2011 at 12:00 noon. Interment in Newtown Village Cemetery will be in the Spring. Friends may call in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown Saturday from 10:00am to 11:30am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Regional Hospice of Western CT, 405 Main St., Danbury, CT 06810 www.regionalhospicect.org or to the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org
