Obituary for Josephine Cieri "Cookie" Buckley

Josephine (Cookie) Cieri Buckley of Newtown, CT passed away on June 19, 2018 after a long illness, at home, surrounded by her family.

Cookie was born in Bronx, NY on February 1, 1935 to Attilio and Pasqualina (Grieco) Cieri. She grew up in the Baychester section of the Bronx and attended Evander Childs High School. From 1953 until 1957, she worked for Dun and Bradstreet in NYC.

In 1955 Cookie met the love of her life, John (Jackie) Buckley and they were married at Our Lady of Grace Church in September 1956. They raised two daughters in the Bronx and then in North Salem, NY, where they lived for 25 years. During that time Cookie volunteered her time and talents at St. Joseph's Church and School in Croton Falls, NY. In the 1980's, Cookie was a small business owner and ran a country furniture and craft shop named "Wit's End" at Cannon Crossing in Wilton, CT. She hand crafted quilts, dolls and ornaments for her business.

In 1994, Cookie retired with her husband to a home on Lake Norman in Mooresville, NC where they lived for 21 years. She enjoyed boating, golfing and volunteering while in NC. She treasured her time with the women of the SWAT Team of St. Therese Church in Mooresville, where they organized funeral luncheons and the yearly rummage sale. In 2015 she moved to her final home in Newtown, CT. One of her greatest joys was to be a grandmother to her 7 grandchildren.

Cookie is survived by her loving husband John, her devoted daughters Deborah (Bill) LaPerch and Patricia (Kevin) Sturm, her adoring grandchildren, Katherine and William LaPerch, Zachary, Micaela, Shelby, Cassidy and Riley Sturm, and her sister Maryann (William) Reckner. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Henry and William, her sister Frances Cieri and her sister-in-law Mary Cieri.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 23rd at 11 am, at St. Rose of Lima Church, 48 Church Hill Rd., Newtown, CT. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Josephine (Cookie) Buckley's name, to St. Therese Catholic Church/SWAT, 217 Brawley School Rd., Mooresville, NC 28117
