Leo's Help

When I first entered the State House in 1973, an old friend from Windsor Locks, Ray Rosa, who was also a good friend of Leo, told me to introduce myself to Leo and to go to him whenever I had a question or needed advice. This was a great suggestion to offer a young and naive new legislator. I was quickly impressed with Leo's tremendous knowledge of state government. I wondered how one man could have so much information. In addition, reports in the press often referred to some mistake uncovered by the State Auditors. The production from Leo amazed me, yet he always had time to meet with me and he took his time answering questions and chatting. Only some time later did I realize that by referring to "State Auditors" the press was referring not to Leo and Henry alone but that there was an entire department watching all aspects of state government. No wonder Leo was such a giant in my eyes! Of course I felt a little foolish and one day I told him the story. He got a big laugh out of it. However, my admiration for Leo only continued to grow. Ray had been correct from the very beginning. Leo was the man to go to for advice on state government and especially the budget. I visited him frequently and gained much by those visits. He was a treasure for the state of Connecticut, a loyal, highly intelligent and dedicated public servant. The more experienced I became the more I grew to appreciate Leo's wisdom.
