Condolence: Dear Family of Leslie Konneker,
My name is Heather Doherty O'Donnell. I grew up with Leslie during her teen age years in White Plains, New York. We were all part of a teen cohort of apartment dwellers who met in our free time at our local hang out, Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School.
We grew up together having an experience unlike that of many of the children or the next generations. We had far fewer planned and structured activities than they but we supported one another well as a group of adolescent friends.
I remember "Lee" as being an extremely kind and compassionate young woman . She was quick to laugh, quicker to smile and the word "bubbly" is a perfect match. One of our adolescent activities was to "drag on each other" (i.e put each other "down" with verbal banter). Lee never did anything like that ! She was warm, caring and demonstrated a rare compassion for all of us in the neighborhood.
I remember when her mother died. It was so tragic and we all tried to "bring her out with us again." I believe that we did ease some of her pain.
My twin brother, Kevin Doherty, met her just a bit over a year ago when Renee brought her younger sister to a White Plains Woman's Club meeting. His wife, Susan Doherty, is very active in the club as well. He called me immediately, gave me her phone number and encouraged me to call her.
Much as I thought of doing so, I was heavily involved in winding down a very demanding twenty-year career as a school psychologist. I retired at the end of last June and somehow and mistakenly I remembered Lee being quite a bit younger than I ( I am actually only one year older). I never expected her to die before I did.
She is the second of my dear friends to pass recently. I am particularly saddened to missed an opportunity to "touch base" with her once more time.
I read her obituary and know that she did live an exemplary life giving to people who needed her as well as to animals who could not ask for her care. She was born to give and did so willingly and generously. What a gift she was to all of us who knew her!
I hope my memories and words will give you an even richer picture of your beloved, wife, mother, sister and friend. She has taught us all how to live a profoundly meaningful life!
