Michael Battista of Sandy Hook, CT died peacefully at Danbury Hosptial on October 24th. He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia (Lalli) of 58 years, his daughters Linda Tortu and her husband Jose Guzman of Tarrytown, NY, Angela Poirier and her husband Bertrand of Keene, NH; his grandchildren Elizabeth and Christopher Tortu and Jonathan Poirier.He is also survived by his sisters Nicoletta Casasanta (Battista) of Wethersfield, CT and Ida DeSantis (Battista) of Brewster NY, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Angelo and his sister Julia DiCairano (Battista). Mr. Battista was born in Ossining, NY on November 28, 1931 a son of the late Angelo and Mary (Zillotti) Battista.Michael served in the US Navy during the Korean War from June 1951 to October 1953. He retired as a produce buyer from the Grand Union Co. He was an avid golfer which he enjoyed for many years with his friends. He was a kind, gentle and generous person throughout his life. We will miss his great sense of humor, wit, and devotion to others. A special thank you to the exceptional care he received in ICU at Danbury Hospital with Dr. Mendes and the many caring doctors and nurses on the 9th floor west. Family and friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown in Newtown CT. on Thursday Oct.27th from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Rd. Newtown on Friday at 11:00am. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery, White Plains, NY will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Assn., PO Box 344, Newtown, CT.
