Obituary for Theodore George "Ted" Whippie

Theodore George "Ted"  Whippie
Theodore G. Whippie, 90, died on February 25, in Newtown with family at his side. Ted was born in Winchester, New Hampshire on July 17th, 1925, to George L. and Muriel (Frizzell) Whippie. He was the husband of the late Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Townley) for 52 years. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate (1943­1946) after which he completed his college education at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Forestry; and at North Carolina State with a Master’s degree in Wood Technology. His career years were spent working for U.S. Plywood in South Carolina and in Brewster, New York at the Research and Development Lab while living in Newtown, CT. Ted was involved in many aspects of the town as he served on several town committees and youth activities, combining his care for the environment and his desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. He served on the Planning and Zoning Committee for several years, as well as other town committees, he was Scout Leader for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, he was instrumental in establishing Cullens Youth Association, and he and Betty enjoyed many years of enjoyment with the Rocking Roosters Square Dance Club. Retirement found him traveling together with Betty in their RV around the United States, Canada and Mexico for eight years, after which they settled down again in Winchester, NH in 1996, where he lived until recently. During these latter years, Ted was involved in many community organizations in his hometown, serving on the Board of Selectman, Kiwanis, the Winchester Historical Society, the Conant Library, and the Winchester Learning Center. Other hobbies he enjoyed at various times during his life included photography, canoeing, backpacking, hand crafting building projects and brewmaster.
He will be missed by his five children: Joan Freeman (Alan) of New Milford, CT; Randy Whippie (Natalie) of Missoula, Montana; Larry Whippie (Linda) of Newtown,CT; John Whippie of Rocky Hill, CT; and David Whippie (Connie) of New Milford, CT. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great­grandchildren: David, Justin, Amy (Matt) DeVoe, and Jonathan Freeman; Katie, Kelly, Shawn and Micheal Whippie; Chad Whippie and his children, Daniella and Morgan Santean Whippie; Thyra (David) Nagy and their children, Kristina and Olivia; Renee (Chad) Barney; Tanya Whippie and her children, Ksenija and Sofija; Karen (Brian) Geerer and their son, Rayland; Carl Whippie; and Katie Whippie. He also leaves behind his brother, Richard (Marion) Whippie of Winchester, NH and his sister, Joyce (Clifton) Sawyer of Greenfield, NH, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, and by his brother, Clifford Whippie.

A celebration of his life will be held in Winchester, NH at the United Church of Winchester on Monday, February 29th at 2pm. Memorial gifts may be made to Cullens Youth Association, PO
