John M. DeCola, age 84 of Sandy Hook died unexpectedly Tuesday December 25, 2012 at Danbury Hospital. Mr. DeCola was the husband of Christina (Hudson) DeCola. He was born in Westport on July 4, 1928 a son of the late Michele and Angelina (Gillardi) DeCola. John was a graduate of Staples High School, Class of 1947 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. For many years, John played sports in the Norwalk Industrial Leagues. In the 1980’s he was named Westport Sportsman of the Year. He was a member of the Oak Hill Golf Association in Norwalk. John was a longtime employee of the Edwards Company of Norwalk. He then was employed by Jared Manufacturing as purchasing agent.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Morrison of Southbury; a daughter, Roger DeCola of Venice, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 sisters, Elizabeth DeCola Esposito, Grace DeCola Chimanto and Helen DeCola Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown Saturday December 29th at 10:00am. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
