Obituary for Mary Rose Matern (Lefkowitz)

Mary Rose Matern died on Saturday May, 11, 2013 at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT; she was surrounded by her loving family when she passed. Mary was born in New York City on April 23, 1926 to the late Mary Tierney and Harry Lefkowitz. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Matern; the two were wed in New Rochelle, NY and shared 48 years of marriage before his death in 1996.
Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her sons; Rick and his wife Ruth of Morris, George and his wife Liz of Brookfield, and Jack and his wife Jane of Newtown and daughters Joan Crobar and her husband Tom of North Eastham, MA and Marilyn of Newtown; 7 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Chris in 1991.
Mrs. Matern was employed for 27 years as a Secretary by Curtis Packaging of Sandy Hook. Mary was an avid bridge player who greatly looked forward to her weekly games. She also enjoyed teaching seniors to play mahjong, knitting and reading in the sun.
Friends may call from 4pm until 8pm on Tuesday May 14th at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Wednesday May 15th at St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown. Interment will follow at Newtown Village Cemetery.
