Uncle Richie's Sadie Yatz

Our family (me, my brother Chris, Aunt Sharon, who should have been my mother, Uncle Richie, their son Rob) used to play Yahtzee at the kitchen table til like 2am. For whatever bizarre reason, I often won. (Dumb blonde luck???) Whenever I won, he would call me Sadie Yahtz. Eventually I asked him why. His story will be forever precious, and perhaps was the beginning of our shared sick sense of humour. Apparently, growing up during WW2, Richie and his sister Marlene, had little to do on Sundays under the rigid, hawk-like gaze of their aunt Marie (whom we all love, even if, or because, it was just that she gave Uncle Richie so much grief! lol). Anyway, young Richie and Marlene would scour the Sunday obituaries (I'm not kidding) for the weirdest names they could find. After YEARS of searching, they finally agreed on the absolute weirdest, most bizarre name ever concocted for an obit... "Sadie Tandalaya Schwartz". When I asked him what that had to do with me, his reply was, "That was the weirdest name we ever found, and it reminded me of you, since you are the weirdest teen I ever met"... and he laughed heartily. What could I do but crack up with him??? So since then my nickname among family has been Sadie. There used to be a bowl of plastic fruit on the dining table, with a banana on top. EVERY night at dinner I would pretend a phone was ringing, pick up the banana, answer it saying, "Hello... oh, yes, he's right here".... and hand him the banana, which he had no choice but to take. LOL But after calling me Sadie, seriously, did he have much choice???? lol We had so much fun, and I adore them both. I am fully aware of what he and my Aunt Sharon sacrificed when they invited my brother and me into their home and their love, and I will never forget it. They truly taught us the meaning of family. I love you, Uncle Richie. I love you, Aunt Sharon. karen
